Rift∆Rise. 1986.

The work is structured as a confrontation of landscapes. A chaotic mass of large fragments evokes a rupture in the earth while a gentle incline of young birch trees provides a contrasting serenity. Video images depicting the perennial motifs of destruction and renewal, principally through fire and water, are literally exchanged across the empty space which divides these two settings. The metaphorical identities of rift and rise thus become interchangeable.

Overall dimensions: 20 x 25 feet. Three synchronized videos, 5:00 min continuous play, color, sound.
